Microsoft’s AI Empire
Posted January 15, 2024
Microsoft overtook Apple to become the world’s most valuable company based on market capitalization on Friday, January 12th.
Little wonder. Microsoft is the company most well positioned to lead and benefit from the AI Revolution.
Its portfolio of businesses (Cloud Services, Operating Systems, business productivity and communications platforms, and gaming) form the perfect combination to make Microsoft the leader in this transformative technology.
Microsoft’s massive cloud infrastructure enables its Cloud customers to harness a variety of AI models and tools for their needs, while allowing Microsoft to run and train its own AI models at the same time.
Its partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, gives Microsoft access to the world’s most advanced AI models and to the minds of the scientists at OpenAI who built those models.
And, as the result of its dominant Windows Operating System, its Microsoft 365 suite of business and communications tools, and its position as a leader in the global gaming industry, Microsoft has billions of existing customers with, in some cases, relationships extending back decades, to whom it can quickly provide AI virtual assistants (Copilots) on the same platforms those customers are using already.
Those advantages, combined with Microsoft’s huge R&D budget and boundless management ambition to be the leader in this technology, ensure that Microsoft will have enormous influence over the way the AI Revolution unfolds and changes the way we live over the next decade.
